UK VAT Return label changes in April 2021

What’s changing?

From 8 April 2021, HMRC changed the names of some of the boxes on the UK VAT Return to reflect that the UK is no longer part of the EU and to recognise the Northern Ireland Protocol changes. Don’t worry, there’s no action for you to take and this change does not affect your VAT Return submissions.

This article explains how the UK VAT Return box labels changed from April 2021.

The changes will affect boxes 2, 4, 8 and 9 as follows:

Current label: VAT due in this period on acquisitions from other EC Member States.
New label from April 2021: VAT due in the period on acquisitions of goods made in Northern Ireland from EU Member States.

Box 4 –
Current Label: VAT reclaimed in the period on purchases and other inputs (including acquisitions from the EU).
New Label: VAT reclaimed in the period on purchases and other inputs (including acquisitions in Northern Ireland from EU member states).
